We all know Toyota is a big part of people getting from place to place. When we think about the mobility Toyota provides though, we probably think more of vehicle transportation instead of people’s physical mobility such as walking and running. But Toyota actually has a big hand in that too. Toyota Motor Corporation recently began clinical trials for its “Walk Training Assist” and “Balance Training Assist” rehabilitation-aid partner robots in medical facilities in Japan.Toyota has been working on these robots since 2007 and created them as tools to help patients with lower limb paralysis, leg injuries and balance trouble.

Toyota is moving away from the traditional Andon cords which have previously been a big part of the “built-in-quality” philosophy of the Toyota manufacturing process. The Andon cords have allowed workers to alert co-workers and supervisors of problems that arise on the manufacturing line so that they don’t continue down the line. Workers simply had to pull the cord to stop the line and alert others there was an issue.

But, no worries, Toyota isn’t compromising the Toyota Way. They are simply improving the process by replacing the cords with yellow call buttons that will be placed at a waist-high level and will essentially function the same way as the legendary Andon cords. The switch will create a safer, less cluttered and more efficient work environment for Toyota employees. The assembly plant in Tsutsumi has already incorporated the yellow buttons, but no announcement has been made as to when U.S. plants will begin switching over.

Toyota has made four teens a lot happier and in an even bigger feat, has gotten teens across the country to share the importance of safe driving habits with their peers. As part of the Toyota Teen Driver joint program by Toyota and Discovery Education, the video challenge asks teens to produce short videos that inspire their peers to avoid distractions while behind the wheel.

More than 1,000 entries were submitted for the challenge this year and the winning team walked away with $15,000 and the chance to turn their video into a professional quality, TV-ready PSA with the help of a Discovery film crew. When two innovative companies come together, you would expect a result that’s well, innovative. And that’s exactly what’s happening as Toyota teams up with social invention company Uncharted Play (UP) to introduce UP’s Think Out of Bounds curriculum. According to the organization, they will use the curriculum and their energy-generating products to challenge traditional approaches to global issues while empowering youth to invent the world they want.

The core of the curriculum will be UP’s best known invention, the Soccket—a soccer ball that harnesses kinetic energy from play for practical, everyday use. The curriculum will first be introduced in New York City and will then spend four weeks in Brazil working with children living in local favelas.

UP Co-Founder and CEO, Jessica O. Matthews, says the curriculum will provide children in New York and Brazil with an off-grid energy option, the tools for creating real inventions in their own communities, and most importantly the ability to do all of this while playing.

Toyota will function as a case study within the curriculum, which will address the innovative ways in which Toyota develops products that address specific consumer needs.
