Tradition Meets Innovation: Titusville, PA Comes Full Circle With Some Help From The Toyota Mirai
Toyota is introducing a new wave of opportunity for the future of hydrogen fuel celled vehicles. Through the minds of Toyota engineers and the eyes of documentary filmmakers T.J. Martin and Dan Lindsay, Fueled By is a series that showcases how the auto industry can grow and change toward the future.
“This small Pennsylvania town saw the boom and bust of the oil industry, making it the perfect place to tell the story of hydrogen as a future fuel and the Toyota Mirai,” T.J. Martin, filmmaker of Toyota’s Fueled By series said. “The residents’ genuine curiosity and enthusiasm for the next step in our country’s transportation story can inspire us all to think differently about energy and technology.”
Larry Moulthrop, Engineer and Co-Founder of Proton Onsite, shows the students of Titusville, PA how hydrogen can be pulled out of water and channeled into energy in a process called water electrolysis. After explaining and showing these students the process, the students presented the experiment to the community of Titusville and showed the community the real life application of hydrogen fuel with a new Toyota Mirai.
Reused Toyota Hybrid Batteries are Providing Sustainable Energy for Yellowstone National Park
Toyota has “flipped” the switch on a sustainable power generator that is producing reliable, zero emission power to the Lamar Buffalo Ranch. Lamar Buffalo Ranch is a field campus that is both a ranger station and educational center in Yellowstone National Park that was founded in 1907.
This innovative distribution energy system, combines solar power generation and re-used Camry Hybrid battery packs. This is a power project has been in the works since June 2014 when Toyota and Yellowstone announced their partnership for keeping Yellowstone one of the most pristine national parks in the United States.
“Toyota’s innovative Response to solve a difficult problem has helped Yellowstone move closer to its goal of becoming the greenest park in the world,” said Steve Lobst, acting superintendent of Yellowstone.
Here are the details of the Yellowstone National Park Sustainability Project Energy Storage and Management System as posted by Toyota:
- Power Generation: 40kW solar system producing ~67,900 kwH annually. (40kW propane backup generator onsite for emergency use only)
- Storage Array: 208 repackaged battery packs, each internally re-wired in parallel and arranged in series in four arrays of 52. Each array provides a nominal 375 volts. Total storage capacity of 85kwH.
- Power Management: Indy Power Systems’ Energy Router™ manages and optimizes generation and use of energy between solar energy, battery storage, and/or propane generators (if emergency generator is needed).

Toyota Production Engineers are stepping up for a Cannonball Run inspired race. Brock Yates, auto racer, writer for Car and Driver Magazine, and screenplay writer of Cannonball Run originally organized the One Lap of America Endurance Race. His son Brock Yates Jr. now organizes the race, and from May 2-9 Toyota engineers, Anthony Magagnoli and Stephen Byington, and their team will see just how far man and machine can go.
“A race like the One Lap, is a true test of man and machine, said lead driver and Toyota Instrumentation Engineer Anthony Magagnoli. Not only is the vehicle pushed to its limits covering nearly 4,000 miles in seven days with race events at 10 racetracks along the way, but the driver and co-driver are pushed to the max as well having to endure long hours in transit between events with no support crew to help with repairs or maintenance along the way.”
Both Magagnoli and Byington have extensive professional racing experience. The Endurance’s Route will leave South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, May 2, and continue on through Omaha, Ne.; Denver, Colo.; Pueblo, Colo.; Forth Worth, Texas.; Plano, Texas.; Tulsa, Okla.; Bowling Green, Ky.; and will end back in South Bend on Saturday, May 9.
We at Brent Brown Toyota are really excited about the One Lap of American Endurance Race. After hearing flack about the all-new Toyota Mirai, Toyota’s “turning point” hydrogen fuel cell car, Toyota partnered with award-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock for a new video series called “Fueled by Everything.”
The first video shows that critics who call hydrogen fuel cells “bullsh*t” aren’t that far from the truth. The first segment, in fact, is titled “Fueled by Bullsh*t,” and features an engineer walking the viewer through the process cow manure goes through to be stripped of it’s hydrogen, and then used to power the all-new Toyota Mirai.
“This project gave us the opportunity to dive into a world that most people don’t understand but has the potential to change our world. Witnessing manure, something most of us view as being pretty disposable, being transformed into hydrogen fuel to power a car was pretty remarkable. I think this short film is pretty compelling evidence of what could be possible in the years ahead,” said Spurlock.
You can see the “Fueled by Everything,” series and get more information on what Toyota is doing with the hydrogen powered car they call a “turning point,” by visiting the Toyota Mirai website.
“We’re putting hydrogen in the spotlight for its exciting potential as a renewable fuel source. This is the beginning of the road for hydrogen, but we see the potential and we’re making a long-term investment in the future,” said senior vice president of automotive operations, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc Bob Carter.
Moving forward and making way for a future of innovation is what Toyota’s Mirai is all about. At Brent Brown Toyota we are anticipating the new waves of innovation that the hydrogen fuel cell powered cars will bring in the future. At the New York Auto Show last month, Toyota introduced the all-new 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid SUV featuring the new Toyota Safety Sense technology. With this move, Toyota is raising the bar on user safety by bringing automated driver assist technologies closer to the mainstream.
“Taking high-level driver assist to the next level, the safety packages will be offered as a very-low-cost option and will be systematically introduced across nearly all U.S. Toyota models and trim levels, by the end of 2017,” said Jim Lentz, President and CEO Toyota Motor North America.
The Toyota Safety Sense C package, for compact cars, comes with the following driver assist technology: pre-collision system, lane departure alert and automatic high beam. Where the Toyota Safety Sense P package, for mid-sized and premium models, also includes pedestrian pre-collision system and dynamic radar cruise control.
“Pushing these systems across our lineup, as quickly as possible, can help protect people in the event of a crash. More importantly it will help prevent some crashes from ever happening in the first place,” Lentz said.
“At Toyota, we believe that the ultimate desire of a society that values mobility should be the eventual elimination of traffic fatalities and injuries,” said Bob Carter, Senior Vice President of Automotive Operations at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. Inc. “Toyota is proud to expand the availability of these technologies – and to do so at an excellent value proposition for our customers as well.”

These days, getting family members involved in their children’s school work is no easy task, but one Washington, D.C. teacher has decided to take on the challenge.
Kristen Whitaker is a teacher at Columbia Heights Education Campus (CHEC) in Washington, D.C, where the student population is 100 percent minority and 90 percent low-income. She leads a family engagement effort, where she herself, as well as fellow faculty who she has trained, have completed over 200 combined family visits.
On March 11th, the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) and Toyota recognized Kristen Whitaker as the 2015 Toyota Family Teacher of the Year for her efforts in engaging students’ families in their children’s education. The award included a $20,000 grant to fund a family summer camp program she created for low-income minority students and their families.
“The family summer camp Kristen plans is a great example of using the Toyota Family Teacher of the Year grant to employ the latest approaches to intergenerational learning in a program that will appeal to and reach entire families,” said Mike Goss, Vice President of External Affairs, Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America.
How do family visits help the students? “Study after study has proven that parents engaged in their children’s learning increases student achievement,” said Sharon Darling, President, NCFL. “And more recent studies also indicate that the willingness of a parent to get involved in their child’s education is very powerful in strengthening the parent-child relationship … as well as the entire school and the community as a whole.”
Congratulations, Kristen, from all of us at Brent Brown Toyota. We are so proud to be a part of a family that is so focused on helping others. Make sure you do not miss any of the events or specials going on at Brent Brown Toyota! FOLLOW US on Twitter and LIKE US on Facebook!
