Where is the Battery in a Hybrid Car?

When you are researching to make the switch to a hybrid car in Provo, understanding the basic mechanical structure is a wise idea. You might assume that the battery for a hybrid car is in the front of the model, but that’s not necessarily the case. So, where is the battery in a hybrid car? What about in a Toyota Prius? Generally, hybrids are equipped with two battery packs, one in the front and the other in the back. Find out the full details with the service team at Orem Toyota about your Lehi vehicle below!

Battery in a Hybrid Car: Auxiliary vs. Traction

The basic setup of a hybrid electric vehicle involves two battery packs– auxiliary and traction batteries. The traction battery pack is the main form of electric power for the hybrid car, and stores the electricity to be utilized by the motor. On the other hand, the auxiliary battery is a smaller, low-voltage battery that helps start the car and powers electronics. A DC/DC Converter converts the higher-voltage DC power from the traction battery pack to the lower-voltage DC power required for the operation of accessories and to recharge the auxiliary battery. Electric vehicle batteries recharge themselves with the electric generator that harnesses energy from braking.

Car Battery on a Toyota Prius & RAV4 Hybrid

For example, if you are trying to find the car battery in a Toyota Prius, you can do so by heading to the rear. For the 2022 model year, the battery is located in the rear of the trunk on the far right side, and beneath a plastic molding. In some cases, however, the hybrid battery can be located beneath the rear seats, confirmed inside your owner’s manual for model year specific information.

As for the Toyota RAV4 hybrid model, it also has the battery located in the back right corner behind the plastic molding. You’ll have to remove the floor cover first, then a plastic molding to the back right. From there, you should be able to access your hybrid battery. Take caution not to touch the battery if you’ve recently been driving because they can reach high temperatures. If you have real concerns about your battery, schedule a service appointment ASAP.
